Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you?

Hi! I’m Stephanie Broder, and I’m an artist, writer, and arts educator located around Vancouver, B.C. With a degree in Illustration and a secret extra degree in Economics, I specialize in comics, graphic novels, silly character illustrations, and novels for middle-grade to young adult readers. I’m currently working on my Master’s degree in Creative Writing at UBC, but you can still find me around town teaching workshops, tabling at events, exhibiting in galleries, and taking on one-on-one art coaching clients.

Are you available for commissions?

Some, yes! I am happy to accept commissions for published works (no personal projects or pet portraits, sorry!), whether digital or print. This includes small/indie presses, such as for zines and magazines, as well as more established publishers.

Are you interested in me being your agent/publisher?

If we are a good match - ABSOLUTELY!

I write and illustrate comics for a middle-grade audience, focusing on adventure stories with a sci-fi or fantasy twist. My stories always feature diverse characters on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum and often highlight areas of neuro-complexity or mental disability from my lived experience. You can expect silly stories with a lot of heart that feature found families and identity exploration.

I write novels for young adult or adult audiences, primarily in speculative fiction (especially genetic manipulation sci-fi and dystopian fantasy). Like my work for kids, you’ll find meaty contemplation of difference and identity alongside questions of institutional loyalty, power, and violent heroism.

Are you accepting art coaching clients?

Unfortunately, due to a full roster of students alongside my graduate studies, I am currently unable to accept long-term art coaching students. You can sign up for my waitlist on my Art Coaching page, or request a one-off session, and I will fit you in if possible!

Will you teach a custom art class for my event/company/birthday party?

If it fits into my busy schedule, I’d be thrilled to! I can create custom art classes for a variety of age levels, skill levels and budgets. More details are available on my Art Coaching page, but feel free to e-mail me your pitch, and we can work together to see if we can make it happen.

Will you do some work for free?

Nope. I volunteer my art skills and time for a select few causes that I have a pre-existing relationship with. If I want to do free art for something, I will approach YOU. I do not accept unsolicited requests for free art.

Can I use your art/blog/intellectual property for something?

You may use my posted art, blog, or other IP only for educational or critique purposes (with credit) unless you have otherwise made arrangements with me. However, I reserve the right to request my content be removed from your project if it is in contravention with the spirit of my work (i.e. to promote hate speech, solicit donations, etc). If you are not sure if your use is acceptable, reach out and ask.
